On an early summer's day in the 1950s two sisters (Fiordaligi & Dorabella) find that their soldier fiancés (Guglielmo & Ferrando) must leave for war. They are heart-broken but are persuaded by their maid Despina that "while the cat's away the mice should play". She introduces them to two young and exciting rockers (Guglielmo & Ferrando in disguise). Little do our young ladies know that this deception is a ploy of Guglielmo's and Ferrando's friend, Don Alfonso (the Fonz), with Despina playing along, to test their faithfulness. Cosi Fan Tutte contains some of the most exquisite melodies that Mozart ever wrote and like his two other preceding operas (The Marriage of Figaro and Don Giovanni) encourages us to explore great depths of emotion beneath the operatic veneer.
